National Mammal Week celebrates mammal diversity

From April 22nd to 28th, National Mammal Week returns, dedicated to raising awareness and promoting conservation of British mammals. Hosted by the Mammal Society, this year the spotlight is on celebrating the rich diversity of both mammalian species and the individuals who dedicate their lives to studying them. Throughout the week-long event, the focus will be shedding light on the stories of often overlooked and underrepresented mammals.

Exploring the past and future of mammal conservation, the week's agenda spans the largely untold history of mammalogy to the future of mammal science and conservation. These discussions underscore the importance of diversity in conservation, emphasising the pivotal role each of us plays in ensuring the thriving future of mammal populations. National Mammal Week advocates for the collective involvement of all, recognising the necessity of different perspectives, voices, and ideas.

From educational webinars and panels featuring leading writers and thinkers, to practical initiatives like the Big Mammal Week Challenge, there's something for everyone to get involved in. Participants can engage in citizen science projects, share their expertise and experiences, and join in fun events like quizzes and family nature days, encouraging us to think about what the future could look like for humans and our mammal-kin.

National Mammal Week stands as a testament to the collective commitment towards safeguarding the diversity of British mammals. By fostering inclusivity and collective action, this celebration serves as a beacon of hope for the protection and restoration of these vital species.

About National Mammal Week

National Mammal Week is organised by the Mammal Society as a celebration of Britain’s mammals and an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges they face. One in four UK mammals are threatened with extinction, with many others in decline. The British Isles and Ireland are home to many species of mammal, from the tiny pygmy shrew to the giant blue whale. And yet, mammals are some of the most under-recorded species in Britain. From April 22nd to 28th, wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists, and nature lovers come together to honour these remarkable creatures and raise awareness about their conservation. Through a series of engaging events, educational activities, and community initiatives, National Mammal Week offers a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of mammalian biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it. Whether you're exploring local habitats, attending informative workshops, or participating in citizen science projects, there's something for everyone to enjoy during this inspiring week-long celebration. Join the movement and be a part of efforts to ensure a bright future for mammals everywhere!
