This comprehensive course is designed to immerse you in the captivating realm of cetaceans and seals, providing a deep understanding of their biology, behavior, and the ecosystems they inhabit, plus opportunities to practice ID skills with land and boat-based surveys.
Course overview:
Saturday AM: welcome and theory sessions.
Lunch (not provided but avaliable to purchase from the venue)
Saturday PM: Land based survey (a short walk from cafe). This will finish around 4pm
Sunday AM: Theory session on boat monitoring
Early lunch (not provided)
Sunday PM: Oxwich Bay for 2 hour boat survey. This will finish around 2pm.
This course will cover:
Cetacean and Seal Biology: Uncover the secrets of marine mammal physiology, behavior, and adaptations that allow them to thrive in their oceanic environments. Explore the unique features that distinguish cetaceans and seals and gain insights into their incredible life cycles.
Species Identification: Learn the art of distinguishing between different marine mammal species. Lauren will guide you through key identification markers, ensuring you can confidently recognize a variety of cetaceans and seals in the wild.
Spotting Tips and Equipment: Discover the essential tools and techniques for effective marine mammal observation. Lauren will share her expertise on spotting tips, equipment selection, and the importance of responsible wildlife viewing to ensure a positive and respectful interaction with these magnificent creatures.
Conservation and Citizen Science: Delve into the critical topic of marine mammal conservation. Lauren will discuss the current challenges facing these species and explore the role of citizen science in safeguarding their habitats. Gain insights into practical ways you can contribute to conservation efforts.
Getting Involved: Explore opportunities to actively participate in marine mammal conservation initiatives. Lauren will provide guidance on how to join relevant projects, volunteer opportunities, and ways to make a meaningful impact in preserving these marine wonders.
